3,関係副詞 ⅰ）when，where，why，how

関係副詞の代表的なものは「when, where, why, how」で、それぞれ「時、場所、原因・理由、方法」を表す先行詞を修飾する形で用いられます。ただし、the time when / the place where / the reason why / the way how などのように、意味的に重複することが明らかな先行詞は省略される傾向にあり、また逆に、限定用法の場合はwhereを除いて、先行詞ではなく関係副詞の方が省略されることもあります。特に、how は、the wayもしくは how のどちらかしか残らないのが一般的です。

しかし、これには「基本的に接続詞用法のwhen, where, why, how が、先行詞を持つ場合に関係副詞と考えられる」と解説する辞書もあり、先行詞が省略されてしまった形は、これらが「接続詞」として用いられているのと同じ形であるとも言えます。

また、when, where は制限用法、非制限用法ともによく使われますが、whyには制限用法しかなく、howも制限用法で用いられるのが一般的なようです。

● I don't know the time when he will come. （私は彼がいつくるのか、知らない）

　= I don't know the time he will come. = I don't know when he will come. = I don't know at which he will come.

● I don't know the place where she lives. （私は彼女がどこに住んでいるか知らない）

　= I don't know where she lives. = I don't know in which she lives.

● I don't know the reason why he left the town. （私は、なぜ彼がその街を去ったか知らない）

　= I don't know the reason he left the town. = I don't know why he left the town. = I don't know for which he left the town.

● I don't know （the way）how she got home. （私は、彼女がどうやって家に辿り着いたのか知らない）

　= I don't know the way she got home. = I don't know how she got home.

関係代名詞は続く節中で主語や目的語などの役割を果たす語を先行詞としますが、関係副詞は続く節中で「副詞」の役割を果たす内容を先行詞とします。例えば、上の例文で関係副詞が導く節は・・・

He will come at ～

She lives in ～

He left the town for / because ～

She got home by ～

以上のように置き換えることができ、従って下線部分は全て関係副詞節中で副詞の役割りを果たしていることが分かると思います。この部分を置き換えて前の部分と接続する働きをするのが「関係副詞」なのです。

ただし、注意しなければならないのは、先行詞が「時、場所、原因・理由、方法」を表す語であっても、文意によってはその語が後続する節において副詞ではなく主語や目的語として機能している場合があることです。この場合は、関係副詞の代わりに関係代名詞を用いて繋ぎます。

● You should use the time which/that you are wasting now for more useful purpose.

　　　（きみは今ムダにしている時間を、もっと有益な目的に使うべきだ）

　　→　you are wasting the time now となり、先行詞は後続節で目的語となる

You shouldn't know the time when the secret operation will begin.

　　　（きみは、その極秘作戦がいつ始まるのか知るべきではない）

　　→　the secret operation will begin at ～　となり、先行詞は後続節で副詞となる

● This is the town which/that he left years ago. （これは、彼が数年前に去った街です）

　　→　he left the town years ago となり、先行詞は後続節で目的語となる

This is the town where he lived years ago. （これは彼が数年前に住んでいた街です）

　　→ he lived in the town years ago となり、先行詞は後続節で副詞となる

● I can't accept the reason which/that she explained to me.

　　　（彼女が私に説明した理由を、私は認めることが出来ない）

　　→　she explained the reason to me となり、先行詞は後続節で目的語となる

I can't accept the reason why she was absent from school yesterday.

　　　（私は、彼女が昨日学校を休んだ理由を認めることが出来ない）

　　→　she was absent from school yesterday because of the reason となり、先行詞は後続節で副詞となる。

● Tell me the way which/that you have found. （きみが見つけた方法を教えて欲しい）

　　→　you have found the way となり、先行詞は後続節で目的語となる

Tell me the way/how you got there. （きみがそこに辿りついた方法を教えて欲しい）

　　→　you got there by ～となり、先行詞は後続節で副詞となる

では、以上のような点に注意して、以下の日本語を英語に直してみて下さい。極力、日本語で考えず、イメージを自動的に英語にする努力をしましょう。もちろん、発音やイントネーションにも注意して下さい。すぐに言えなかった場合は正解例を見て記憶し、少し時間を置いてから言えるかどうか試してみます。これを何回か繰り返すうちに、日本語に対応した英語が難なく出てくるようになると思いますよ。

1. 私は、今が立ち上がって話すべき時であると思った。（制限用法のwhenを用いて）	1. I thought this is the moment when I had to stand up and speak.
2. 彼は水曜日までそこに滞在し、それからロンドンへと旅立った。（非制限用法のwhenを用いて）	2. He stayed there till Wednesday, when he started for London.
3. トムは、愛情と理解を得られる家庭を必要としていた。（制限用法のwhereを用いて）	3. Tom needed a home where he could receive love and understanding.
4. そういう基準が、実用的でない場合も多い。（制限用法のwhereを用いて）	4. There are many cases where such a principle is not practicable.
5. 彼らはその町にやって来て、そこで一晩過ごした。（非制限用法のwhereを用いて）	5. They came to the town, where they stayed for a night.
6. 彼がその仕事を辞めたのには、いろいろな理由があった。（制限用法のwhyを用いて）	6. There were many reasons why he quit the job.
7. 私がそこに行ってはならない理由などないだろう。（制限用法のwhyを用いて）	7. I know no reason why I shouldn't go there.
8. そうやって、彼は問題を解決した。（制限用法のhowを用いて）	8. That is how he solved the problem. = That is the way he solved the problem.
9. 春は、冬の後に来る季節である。　　/ 春は、日本では新学期が始まる季節である。（関係代名詞か関係副詞かに注意して）	9. Spring is the season which/that comes after winter. 　/ Spring is the season when a new school term begins in Japan.
10. 私は数年前に訪れた街を覚えている。 / 私は、我々が始めて会った街を覚えている。（関係代名詞か関係副詞かに注意して）	10. I remember the town which/that I visited years ago. 　/ I remember the town where we first met.

解答例４．whereは具体的な場所を表す先行詞ばかりではなく、この例文のように概念的な場所（= 場合など）を先行詞とすることもあります。

解答例９．第1文 →　the season (= spring) comes after winter となり、先行詞は後続節で主語となる。

　第2文 → a new school term begins in the season (= spring) in Japan となり、先行詞は後続節で副詞となる。

解答例１０．第1文 →　I visited the town years ago となり、先行詞は後続節で目的語となる。

　第2文 → we first met at/in the town となり、先行詞は後続節で副詞となる。
